Nervous Breakdown Recovery

Recommended Posts

I had a nervous breakdown 7 months ago and the recovering is still difficult. I am not working at the present moment and everyday is different with ups and downs in my emotions. At this moment I am fighting against my depression, anxiety and obsessive thinking but sometimes is very difficult.

As anybody any experience how long it takes for a person to recover from a nervous breakdown?

Hi elevenoceans,

Are you on medication? If you are it does sound that you urgently need to change your medication as it is not being effective. It is a case of trial and error with medications to see what works, and I went through a few different ADs before I got the really effective Ad and effective dose.

So see your Doctor soon and get a drug review. Keep as active as you can and do as much as you can to be happy and positive.

Best Wishes

In my case, recovery didn't happen on it's own. Of course, in my nervous breakdown I went to war with myself and killed my self-esteem.

In my opinion, recovery length is determined by severity, education, medication, and talk therapy.

I wouldn't want to say one way or another, because I really believe that there are a lot of factors that determine recovery length. That, and I don't want to create a trigger. In my case, I'm going on 7 years, but I really didn't figure out "how" to recover for a long time. Still trying to find a medication I tolerate, but am making progress with CBT, in the meantime.

I hope it's speedy for you!

Hello Jim. I made the mistake of stopping the medication about 3 months ago without consulting my doctor. The depression returned even worse and I started a new treatment plan 2 months ago. I do not know if it is necessary to change or try a new medication. Currently I am taking 20 mg of Lexapro a day.

Since you have changed around your meds a bit I would give it another couple of weeks. Sometimes it can take a while for the medications to get stable in our system. Plus when it comes to recovery it's never really a steady thing. You're always going to have some ups and downs, or at least most of us do. It took me a good year or so after my breakdown to really get back to being "me" again. The first 2-3 months were the WORST. After that it sort of leveled off. The thing is I still to this day have had strange bouts of anxiety to deal with. Seem to come up at random times and come and go quickly though. When it comes to getting well you have to expect to take some setbacks because you need time to learn and cope. Some of us get through it quick, and others take years. You just never know.

I will say that getting help EARLY after you notice your need it can be a huge help to getting well faster. In my case I did everything I possibly could to get well as soon as I had my breakdown. It made my recovery pretty quick and I am grateful for that.

Hang in there and give it a bit more time. You're just in the early stages now and like I said you'll still have your ups and downs. I like to call it the yo-yo effect. Just work through these times and focus on getting well. I promise that better times will come.

Thank you darcness for your kind words. As I already said I made the mistake of stopping the medication to soon. What bother me most was that I was seeing (and still seeing) a therapist and told her that I planned to quit the meds and she did not alert me about the further complications about this decision nor try to stop me from doing this mistake without counsulting my doctor.
