A £16.99 and a £25.99 bottle of the retailer's own-brand bubbly have been awarded Gold awards in the Champagne & Sparkling wine World Championships 2017. Co-op's winning £16.99 bottle is a Les Pionniers NV Brut, while the £25.99 bottle is a Les Pionniers 2008 Vintage Brut. They were the only supermarket fizz to have received the accolade. The budget-friendly champagne was ranked alongside prestigious heritage brands including Verve Cliquot, Cristal and Dom Pérignon. champagne Aldi's own-brand wine has also recently won a prestigious award Credit: foodfolio / Alamy, Also among the "gold" winners was a Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Rosé 2004 which retails at £396 and a Dom Pérignon 1998 P2 Magnum retailing at £310. Vying for the gold award, which was handed to a total of 16 champagnes, were wines from over 29 countries worldwide. It comes after an Aldi wine costing £9.99 scooped a top gong last month, beating other bottles costing more than twice the price. Its Lot Series Minervois La Liviniere 2015 was awarded a Gold prize at the Decanter awards, another of the world’s most respected drink competitions. Ben Cahill, Champagne Buyer at Co-op, said: “It’s fantastic to see Co-op’s own brand Champagne rubbing shoulders with some of the most esteemed brands in the industry.
