A provocative image of Angela Merkel wearing a chador in front of minarets rising from the Bundestag has provoked complaints to a German TV station as tensions rise over the influx of migrants to the country.
The “Merka” photo-montage was made by the Report from Berlin programme on the public service broadcaster ARD as the backdrop for a debate on whether there should be quotas for refugees.
Some viewers complained that it was anti-Muslim propaganda rather than satire because it was reminiscent of an image displayed on posters at the Monday night marches by the anti-immigrant group Pegida – Patriotic Europeans
