Councillor Bob Frost gets away with tweet

18 June 2015
by Eleanor Perkins

Dover District Council will not be taking any action against Conservative councillor Bob Frost after complaints were made about one of his tweets.

On Sunday, May 24, the 63-year-old, who represents north Deal, posted a tweet telling a Big Issue seller to f*** off back to Romania.

He was reported to the council’s Monitoring Officer David Randall as well as suspended by his party.

He received a letter yesterday morning from Mr Randall explaining there is no case to answer.

It read: “This complaint does not merit further action and this is therefore the end of the process.”

Cllr Frost said: “People are at liberty to complain but I hope the four people who complained have realised they have wasted a lot of council tax money and officers' time. I’m not impressed.”

Although the four complainants were named in the letter, Cllr Frost would not disclose such information.

He said: “I don’t wish to cause them further embarrassment. I’m sure they feel foolish enough.”

Throughout the ordeal Cllr Frost has always fought against claims the tweet was offensive or racist.

He said: “It was satire pointing out what’s wrong with society. It’s an old joke.”

The councillor has recently been supported by the satirical magazine Private Eye.

On page 18 of the June 12 edition, a contributor writes: “Tory councillors used to include among their ranks hundreds of choleric middle-aged men whose politically incorrect rants were good for a few entertaining column inches.

"Then Ukip came along and the sweary bigots found their natural home, leaving the Conservative party a more civilised but duller place.

“So it was good to see the Tory angry brigade making a comeback last month. Take a bow, Cllr Bob Frost.”
