Lindsey Vonn backs up Tiger Woods in his screed against Dan Jenkins’ parody piece in ‘Golf Digest’

U.S. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn must really love Tiger Woods. We know this because she’s doubling down on the ridiculous screed posted by Tiger Woods on The Player’s Tribune on Tuesday disputing a clearly labeled work of satirical fiction published in Golf Digest as if it was a real news article. See, any reasonable person not in love would never defend such a silly argument. In fact, a reasonable person might take the opportunity to note all the ways his essay was off base. But love isn’t rational, which might be why Vonn chimed in with this series of equally off-base statements when USA Today asked her about the matter:

“We talked about the article and that he was going to say something,” Vonn told USA TODAY Sports. “I completely agree with him. I agree with his statement and I’m glad that he did it. That’s not journalism. It was like a fabricated interview, like what (Jenkins) thinks Tiger would say.”

“But it went way too far, and it wasn’t very clear that it was a joke, that it was fabricated. If you read it, you might think that it was actually Tiger talking. The whole thing is completely ridiculous.”

If Vonn, and Woods for that matter, really believe what they’re saying, then the only rational conclusion here is that they think everyone who reads Golf Digest is an idiot, because here’s how the piece, titled “My (Fake) Interview With Tiger Woods: Or how it plays out in my mind,” written by respected, longtime, 84-year-old golf writer Dan Jenkins, begins:

When Tiger Woods returned to golf from his back surgery, the national media saw it as the greatest news flash since D-Day. This energized me so much I immediately tracked down Tiger and asked if we could do the interview we should have done years ago. Surprisingly, Tiger agreed and suggested we grab a couple of orange Slurpees at the 7-Eleven and meet at a GameStop, where we could play Tomb Raider during breaks.

If anyone anywhere believes Woods actually suggested he meet Jenkins at a GameStop so he could play Tomb Raider while sucking down an orange Slurpee from 7-Eleven, it’s safe to assume that person probably doesn’t know how to read. And even if another person read the article aloud to said individual who would have to literally be the dumbest person on Earth to mistake the parody for reality, what would this person do with said information? Nothing.

The real irony here is that no one would be talking about Jenkins’s Golf Digest piece if Woods and Vonn weren’t making such a big deal out of it.
