In November 2011, its Paris offices were gutted in a firebomb attack. **CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE IMAGES OF OTHER TERRORISM** The magazine's editor-in-chief Stephane Charbonnier - also known only as Charb - said at the time he was convinced the fire was linked to a special edition in which it joked that it had appointed the Prophet Muhammed as its 'guest editor'. He said: "We feel we're just doing our job as usual. The only difference is that this week, Muhammad is on the cover and that's quite rare. "We are against all religious fundamentalism but we are not against practising Muslims. We are for the Arab Spring, and against the winter of fanatics." The edition was renamed as the 'Sharia Weekly' and had a front page cartoon of the Islamic Prophet with the slogan '100 lashes if you don't die laughing'. On the back was a picture of Muhammed wearing a red clown nose, and the words, 'Yes, Islam is compatible with humour'. The depiction of the Prophet's face is strictly prohibited in Islam. Police said at the time they suspected extremists had destroyed the magazine's main office in central Paris with a petrol bomb. No one was injured in the blaze. Charlie Hebdo - known as a French version of British satirical publication Private Eye - courted controversy again in September 2012 after it published a series of satirical cartoons of Prophet Muhammed. That edition sold out within hours. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius criticised the timing of publication, as it came after a series of attacks on US embassies in the Middle East, reportedly in response to the anti-Islamic film Innocence of Muslims. Mr Fabius said at the time: "In the present context, given this absurd video that has been aired, strong emotions have been awakened in many Muslim countries. “Is it really sensible or intelligent to pour oil on the fire?” Charlie Hebdo's journalist Gérard Biard commented at the time: "The caricatures are meant to satirise the video and the violence it has stirred and to denounce that violence as absurd. “What are we supposed to do when there’s news like this?” “Are we supposed to not do that news?” In 2006, Charlie Hebdo republished Muhammed cartoons that had sparked worldwide protests when they originally ran in Denmark. A Paris court later threw out an attempt by two Muslim organisations to sue for incitement to hatred. It has previously been reported how Charlie Hebdo must sell 30,000 issues of its weekly magazine from news-stands to keep afloat. It has routinely seen sales double or magazines sell out each time it has run controversial cartoons of Muhammed.
