Two of the biggest bands in the UK at the time, the talent was real on both sides – but so was the rivalry, and neither band held back, especially when it came to slating each other in the press. Accepting that both bands were brilliant in their own ways, thanks to a very early introduction to a naked Damon Albarn (I was nine, he was naked in the bath on the TV singing about rich people having nervous breakdowns) this unashamed Britpop fanatic is a Blur supporter through and through – so here are 14 reasons why they deserved to win. 1. Clever, edgy and satirical Country House is the better song lyrically. 2. Blur sold 58,000 more records of Country House, a clear win even if Oasis’ did have barcode issues with their single. 20th anniversary of the Blur/Oasis battle: 14 reasons Blur deserved to win 3. Blur’s musicians are multi-talented – drummer Dave Rowntree is a solicitor and political activist, Graham Coxon is an artist, Damon Albarn is a record-producer and multi-instrumentalist and Alex James is a journalist and cheesemaker. Both bands sang about love very poignantly, but Blur had the edge with elegant love songs like Tender. 20th anniversary of the Blur/Oasis battle: 14 reasons Blur deserved to win 6. Blur were arguably more experimental and expansive in their approach to music than Oasis, sparking eventual departures into new bands – Gorillaz, The Good the Bad & the Queen – and solo projects. 7. While Blur suffered its internal fall outs, there were none to rival the explosive Noel/Liam rift. Although it did come with some superb insults on Noel’s part: ‘Liam is like a man with a fork in a world of soup.’ 8. Blur tended to explore the challenges of modern life in their lyrics, while Oasis’s themes were simpler and often hedonistic. 20th anniversary of the Blur/Oasis battle: 14 reasons Blur deserved to win 9. Blur are better at satire and character assassination – Charmless Man showcases Blur’s weird blend of humour and sadness: ‘He talks at speed / he gets nose bleeds / He doesn’t see / his days are tumbling / down upon him’. 10. Blur didn’t declare themselves to be ‘the next Beatles’ – unlike Oasis 20th anniversary of the Blur/Oasis battle: 14 reasons Blur deserved to win 11. Everybody loves an underdog, and Blur were decidedly that – not only did Oasis beat them in the coolness stakes what with their edgy parkas, long hair and bad behaviour, but they also had a far steadier trajectory in many ways. Blur had some unsuccessful albums, and failed to make a dent in America, unlike Oasis. 12. Blur had a sexier lead singer – Liam had the bad boy reputation but Damon had the come-to-bed eyes. 20th anniversary of the Blur/Oasis battle: 14 reasons Blur deserved to win 13. Blur’s lyrics are much smarter and tighter. They could sum up the loneliness of modern life in a single line: ‘No one here is alone, satellites in every home’. 14. Blur’s personality as a band was more intriguing; they were at once arch, comic, ironic, introverted, artistic, pessimistic, nervy, sexy and utterly captivating. Oasis’ personality as a band was certainly very potent, but it lacked the same complexity. 20th anniversary of the Blur/Oasis battle: 14 reasons Blur deserved to win MORE: What was the biggest selling album in 1995 Britpop Britain?
