Charlie Hebdo, French for Charlie Weekly, is a satirical weekly newspaper published every Wednesday that was first founded in 1969. It publishes cartoons, jokes and 'news' reports. It has a circulation of around 45,000. What kind of stories do they publish? Reuters Charlie Hebdo At work: A journalist in the Paris newsroom of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo The newspaper's tone is known to be rebellious, anti-religious and left-wing, having published several articles about the extreme right and poking fun at several different religions. Its editor Stephane Charbonnier once said its editorial viewpoint reflects "all components of left wing pluralism, and even abstainers". A fierce advocate for free speech, Charlie Hebdo is also known for its satirical, and often controversial, cartoons. Where are they located? The Charlie Hebdo headquarters is based in Paris, France. Why were they targeted? In 2011, the publication got fire-bombed after publishing a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad. Two years later, Charlie Hebdo published a comic book biography of Islam's founder. And just hours ago their Twitter feed posted a cartoon mocking the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, with the caption 'Meilleurs vœux, au fait,' which translates as 'best wishes, by the way'. Speaking at the scene, French President Francois Hollande said: "We are threatened because we are a country of liberty." UK Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: "The murders in Paris are sickening. We stand with the French people in the fight against terror and defending the freedom of the press." The murders in Paris are sickening. Rex Stephane Charbonnier Controversy: Stephane Charbonnier is the well-known editor of Charlie Hebdo Since 2012, the editor of the magazine has been Stephane Charbonnier. There is believed to be a small number of staff, including cartoonists and journalists, who work alongside him in putting the paper out on the streets. Early reports suggest 12 people were killed in the shooting and at least 10 were wounded. None of the victims have been formally identified but France24 claim a lawyer for the newspaper named four killed as Jean Cabut (Cabu), the paper's editor Stéphane Charbonnier (Charb), Tignous and Wolinski. An unnamed member of staff from Charlie Hebdo told French media that he and his colleagues received countless threats by email and phone - but did not take them too seriously. "Of course our offices were under police protection, which reminded us of the threats. "Charb [the magazine's editor] was under police protection but sometimes he would move without policemen, which was a sign that he wasn’t worried at every moment. "Luz and Riss too had police protection but it was stopped about a year ago.…we receive threats by email all the time and phone calls. But we don’t really take them seriously. "We’ve become used to it. Recently we thought the threats we’re pretty much done."
