The Clyde definitely beats the Thames in a fight It's been a great year for Glasgow IT'S been a huge year for Glasgow. And Glasgow Now, your source for local news, sport and features, has been covering all of it. But with 2015 fast approaching, we looked back at some of our favourite stories from this year you might have missed. We interviewed top judge Justice Albie Sachs, who was a leading anti-apartheid voice, when he visited Glasgow this year to speak at a symposium marking 20 years of democracy in South Africa May saw us publish a special themed edition celebrating Glaswegian patter. This led to one of our favourite interviews of the year when Rab C Nesbitt star Tony Roper told us that Robert De Niro should have used a Glaswegian accent when delivering Travis Bickle’s famous line in Taxi Driver. Our special edition also covered how the city’s unique humour was responsible for the world’s first comic book , and helped shape the early days of satire. Pizza Hut was looking to increase its slice of the restaurant market in Glasgow, but its so-called Glaswegian menu was panned as being more pirate than patter. May also saw us report on the amazing fortitude of a Glasgow man who conquered the toughest foot race on Earth in memory of his nephew. Rob Cussons raised nearly £10,000 for by doing the 150-mile , six-day Marathon des Sables across the Sahara desert in honour of his late nephew Sam Leask, who died age nine from a rare auto-immune disease. C.Angot © MDS2014 Rob Cussons midway through the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara desert Rob Cussons midway through the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara desert And our hearts were warmed when Stean Kurt Kinley brought commuters to a standstill as he proposed to girlfriend Hannah Brearley-Jones in Central Station. He put forward the marriage proposal seconds after the couple completed a gruelling 400-mile walk to raise cash for Cancer Research UK. Young talent in Glasgow proved their business chops back in August, when two city product designers raised nearly £100,000 from crowd-funding to bankroll their minimalist watch. And the city's big heart was plain to see when hundreds of T in the Park revellers donated their sleeping bags to a homeless charity. We also took a first hand look at the excellent work done by the Glasgow Winter Night Shelter helping some of the most vulnerable in society get through cold weather. Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland, and as we discovered in 2014, has some of the biggest portions too. Our man Joe tried, and failed miserably, to take on a Giffnock pizzeria’s 27 inch pizza , much to the delight of a hungry newsroom. And that was a tastier prospect than our video report on Glaswegians turning to insect cuisine for lunch. If you’ve ever admired street art in Glasgow, the chances are you’ve been looking at a Rogue One masterpiece. We spoke to the street artist - real name Bobby McNamara - about how he started his career as a tagger and has now become one of the most in-demand names in the business. Stephen Fyfe/Flickr Rogue One's handiwork Rogue One's handiwork In June Glasgow Now scooped another top gong for our reporting on asylum seeker issues. Reporter Cordelia O’Neill was named the winner of the Local Press Award at the Refugee Week Scotland Media Awards for her piece covering a group of female refugees campaigning to get their voices heard. March saw us report on an innovative project which uses music to help former servicemen and women. RE: Tune harnesses the power of music, and the skills needed to build instruments , to help those who have served their country tackle the problems many of them encounter as they leave the forces and try to readjust to civilian life. And though many don't realise, guitar maker Jimmy Moon has been supplying some of the world's top musicians with instruments for decades from the south side of Glasgow. Tom Ross/Media Scotland Jimmy says it is getting harder to get wood in Glasgow to make his quality instruments. The local amateur dramatics scene had another strong year, with one Glasgow actor receiving a letter from John Travolta. Newton Mearns man Kevin McGuire was in Boogie Wonderland after the Grease star wrote to wish him good luck for his lead role in 70s musical Disco Inferno. We also uncovered the hidden talents of the city’s taxi drivers. Cabbie Pat Mullaney used his experiences behind the wheel as inspiration for his book of poetry, Musings of a Glasgow Taxi Driver. Our snappers also took some amazing photos over 2014, as evidenced by some stunning picture galleries. As part of our celebration of things made in Glasgow, we spoke to Barras fashion queens Obscure Couture about four years of high-end style and plans for the future. Roberto Cavieres/Media Scotland Obscure Couture modelled by Marlies Roland, Superior Model Management Obscure Couture modelled by Marlies Roland, Superior Model Management We also examined some of the homegrown talent in the jewellery and alcohol market with designer Euan McWhirter and the Glasgow Distillery Company. June saw us get a sneak peek under the canvas of the world-famous Zippos Circus. With performing budgies, Herculean strongmen, amazing acrobatics and excellent equestrianship, our gallery reveals the colour of the Big Top . Style and charity combined in February as Glasgow University students staged a fashion show to benefit the Scottish Spina Bifida Association. We also highlighted some amazing photographs from yesteryear of areas across Glasgow. from the city centre , to the east end and beyond . And for those with a flair for the ghoulish, we spoke to burlesque boss Tina Warren on the success of Club Noir, and documented in pictures the event's special Halloween night over a decade. Finally, if the above hasn't proven an exhaustive read for you, why not try your hand at our quiz on the year's news, or our quiz on how well you know Glasgow?
