A ONE off comedy featuring a series of sketches on the referendum will be shown tonight on BBC Scotland. The programme, What’s Funny About The Indyref, has been pulled together from 5000 submitted sketches after a BBC appeal for “new young writers.” Daily Record readers are being given exclusive preview access to one of the funnies from tonight’s show. The full programme will be shown on BBC2 at 10.30pm. Director Jim Owen said: “We received an extraordinary number of submissions from all across the UK, so it was a big process. “Nothing is beyond satire and I think we should always try to find the comedy in anything we do. “The referendum is as available for laughs as much as anything else is. “Comedy is a great way of engaging young people particularly in politics, and maybe that’s been missing a little bit. It certainly feels that way. “I would imagine there are more people engaged in the referendum than there are in Westminster politics, and I think comedy is a great route into getting young people’s attention. So for that reason alone I think it’s important. And now is the right time to throw things like this onto TV. ”With the tension building as both sides ramp up their arguments in the final days of the referendum campaign, London-based director Jim was encouraged by one pattern evident in the sketches. He said: “Everybody was happy to take the p*ss out of themselves, that was very clear. People who could be considered to be leaning towards yes were happy to poke fun at that, and the same went for pro-union supporters. It meant it was all good natured and not too bitter or personal or ascerbic.” Video: A campaign tale - What's Funny About The Indyref Video loading Click to play TheScottishDailyRecord Recently Published Scotland's top stand-up comic reveals that fellow comedians were left in tears following No vote Bruce Fummey was named as Scottish Comedian of the Year this week, but says it's too soon for jokes about the independence referendum. * Scottish independence: The Simpsons' groundskeeper Willie shares his views on the debate in hilarious clip * Video: Burnistoun creator Robert Florence releases never before seen sketch from the BBC2 comedy to mark independence referendum Previous Articles Controversial comic Frankie Boyle to host BBC show on independence referendum results THE controversial Scots comedian, who is a Yes supporter, will host an 'autopsy' programme on the iPlayer in the aftermath of the poll on September 18. * Comic takes on Indy Ref in Perth Watch STV player now STV player Catch up on your favourite STV programmes right now Related Tags Organisations BBC In the News Independence referendum See Also Comedy Recommended in TV & Radio News * Photography Lights, Camera, Fashion: Meet legendary Scots photographer Albert Watson who has captured everyone from Kate Moss to Jerry Hall * BBC Hurricane Higgins blows through Falkirk in new BBC comedy drama telling the story of snooker's 1980s heyday * Glasgow News Watch new Celtic star Sergei Sviatchenko's strange fashion videos as he heads-up successful style blog with his brother * Children Call the Midwife star Jenny Agutter: Now we're in the 60s it's no longer a period drama for me.. and it's bringing back great memories * Pavilion Theatre Theatre boss who took a chance on Mrs Brown's Boys says comedy Real Hoosewives fae Glesga is becoming as big as smash hit show * Comedy Scots funnyman Limmy tells why 2015 became one of his best years after threatening to be one of his worst * Comedy Rising comedy star: I was expelled from three schools and didn't pass any exams.
