The “UKIP Calypso” sees the DJ sing the praises of Nigel Farage. Read, a former Tory supporter, defended the song and claimed it was not “remotely racist” to sing in mock-Caribbean accent. “It’s a satire and a bit of fun. It’s not terribly serious. It wouldn’t have sounded very good sung in a Surrey accent,” he said. Mr Farage gave it his seal of approval while the bookies made it 50-1 to make Number One in the charts. The track includes the lyrics: “Leaders committed a cardinal sin, open the borders let them all come in; illegal immigrants in every town - stand up and be counted, Blair and Brown.” It continues: “Oh yes, when we take charge, and the new Prime Minister is Farage, we can trade with the world again – when Nigel is at No 10.” Angel Air But some reviewers on Amazon branded it racist and John Prescott tweeted: “I never knew Mike Read had a criminal record. I do now.” Labour MP David Lammy said: “‘UKIP Calypso’ is everything we’ve come to expect from a party whose politics is based firmly on prejudice, resentment and fear-mongering.” The DJ first performed the song at a private dinner during UKIP’s party conference in Doncaster. Other lyrics include: “With the EU we must be on our mettle, want to change our lawnmowers and our kettles” and “The other parties will count the cost, in Eastleigh, Thanet, Thurrock and Boston, Labour and Tories shaking in their boots when UKIP kick them up the grass roots.” Getty UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage smokes a cigarette outside the Volunteer Rifleman's Arms pub, as he visits Bath to meet with party members, candiadates and supporters in Bath and North East Somerset, England. Man of the people: Farage There is also a pop at David Cameron: “The British people have been let down, that’s why Ukip is making ground. From Crewe to Cleethorpes, from Hull to Hendon, they don’t believe Cameron’s referendum.” Mr Farage went on Twitter to urge his supporters to get the Calypso to Number One. But there were mixed reviews on Amazon where you can download the track for 79p. One comment read: “My god, the musical equivalent of the Ebola virus. Anyway, isn’t calypso music a bit foreign for UKIP?” Another review said: “Surely we should have moved on from white men singing in funny accents? I found this song a sad reflection of a sick society.” UKIP’s previous attempt to adopt Caribbean culture ended in farce when organisers had to cancel a “carnival of colour” during the local elections in May. The event descended into farce after the steel band found out they had been booked to support the anti-european party. Read, 67, who now presents a show on BBC Radio Berkshire, has had limited success as a songwriter. His musical Oscar based on the life of Oscar Wilde closed in 2004 after just one performance. If you can’t bear to listen to it, UsVsTh3m have transcribed the entire set of lyrics for your pleasure: “Tax payers money where does it go? Not even George Osborne knows When we’re in power and we engage There will be no tax on minimum wage Our leaders committed a cardinal sin Open the borders let them all come in Illegal immigrants in every town Stand up and be counted Blair and Brown Chorus: Oh yes when we take charge And the new Prime Minister is Farage We can trade with the world again When Nigel is at number 10 The British People have been let down That’s why UKIP is making ground From Crewe to Cleethorpes to Outer Hendon They don’t believe Cameron’s referendum Coalition could be a fact With any party we could make a pact Stop telling lies about us too And we’ll stop telling the truth about you [Chorus] Though our pension scheme is in a mess We need money for the NHS With Jean-Claude Juncker we’re giving away 55 million every day Oh what a farce, he won the vote This is my favourite Juncker quote He looked the reporters straight in the eyes “When things get serious it’s time to lie” [Chorus] The EU live in wonderland Tried to ban bent bananas and British jam We don’t want jam the EU way Jam yesterday, tomorrow and never today The daily polls suggest somehow UKIP are the third party now In the Euro elections we were so immersed We weren’t the third party, we were the first [Chorus] When the government’s sitting on the fence UKIP policies make more sense Get out of Europe, is our target Common wealth and not common market Other parties please take note UKIP is not a protest vote So mark your cross and by word of mouth Tell them what to do in Thanet South [chorus] With the EU we must be on our mettle They want to change our lawnmowers and our kettles Our hairdryers, smartphones and vacuum cleaners But UKIP is wise to their misdemeanours Farage he likes his fags and beer But there’s one thing I want to get clear Now I like Nigel he’s a friend of mine He appears on Dimbleby on Question Time [chorus] The other parties will count the costings In Eastleigh, Thurrock and Bow they’re lost in Labour and Tories shaking in their boots When UKIP kick them up the grassroots Meanwhile down on Clacton-on-Sea UKIP are making history Douglas Carswell is quite adamant Will be the first MP in parliament.” Poll loading … DailyMirror Recently Published Nelson's Column: Angela Merkel and the Germans don't get we Brits are an island race Migrating across EU borders is easy if you're German, says Sunday People political editor Nigel Nelson, but a right schlep for a Brit * Mike Read withdraws UKIP Calypso song from sale and apologises for 'unintentionally causing offence' * UKIP's 'ordinary folk' running the party are spin doctors, old Etonians and Oxbridge graduates Previous Articles Bill Oddie 'ashamed to be British' and says families with too many children should be 'contained' Bill Oddie The former funnyman made his controversial comments as he appeared on a BBC 1 show debating the issue of immigration * Labour voters do not want a poll on the EU, shock new poll reveals Related Tags Organisations UKIP People Nigel Farage See Also Politics In the news Must see Recommended in Weird News * RNLI Northumbria Police Lifeboat footage of desperate night-time search among huge waves for teenager who died after swept of pier into freezing sea * YouTube Real-life Crocodile Dundee demonstrates some Outback dentistry that will make your toes curl * House fires Tragedy as teenage girl loses mum and dad in house fire * Weather UK weather forcast: Snow blankets Britain as kids rejoice but travellers warned over icy conditions * Former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Deputy Prime Minister, Lord John Prescott joins Labour candidate Louise Baldock as he gives a speech to party members in front of her campaign office Andrew Marr John Prescott blasts BBC interview with Jeremy Corbyn as a "disgrace" for obsessing with 1980s debates * A badly parked car damaging the car next to it in Fareham car park in Portsmouth Motoring mishaps This may be the worst parking ever seen as driver wedges themselves against a neighbouring car * Burger King Spider Burger King Inc.
