It's coming down to the final day of the regular season for the right to host the Canada West Final Four women's soccer championship.
The first-place Trinity Western Spartans (11-1-1-34) and the second-place UBC Thunderbirds (10-1-2-32) each won games Saturday, meaning the Spartans will likely need a victory today to clinch first place as the 14-game regular season comes to a close. The Spartans play at fourth-place Calgary (6-4-3-21) while UBC closes out at winless Lethbridge (0-10-3-3).
The winner plays host to the fourteam Canada West championship tournament next weekend.
On Saturday, Janine Frazao's goal carried UBC to a 1-0 win at Calgary. Meanwhile, the Spartans claimed a 2-0 win at Lethbridge.
MEN'S HOCKEY
UBC (2-1-2) dropped its first regulation time game of the young season, falling 5-1 in Regina on Friday to the Rams (2-5-0).
UBC, which was held off the scoresheet until the final three minutes of the third period when Wyatt Hamilton spoiled the shutout bid of goalie Lucas Gore.
VOLLEYBALL
The UBC Okanagan Heat men's and women's volleyball teams made their Canada West debut a successful one, sweeping the Winnipeg Wesmen in a double header at Kelowna. The women beat CIS No. 6-ranked Winnipeg 3-1 (25-20, 26-24, 18-25, 26-24) behind 14 kills from Alex Basso.
The men's Heat also beat Winnipeg 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 30-28, 25-20), led by the 12 kills of Devin Schmidt.
In other women's games: Fourtime defending national champion and No. 1-ranked UBC dispatched host Regina 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) with 10 kills from Kyla Richey; No. 10 Trinity Western swept past hist Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-9) as outside hitter Amy Leschied finished with 10 kills, four blocks and two aces.
In other men's action: Defending national champion TWU got 24 kills from Steve Marshall and 20 from Rudy Verhoeff to edge hos Saskatchewan 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-12, 25-17, 17-15). No. 5 UBC, led by the 14 kills of rookie Jarrid Ireland, topped host Regina 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-20, 25-11).
