Austin Wonaeamirri. Photo: Pat Scala MELBOURNE yesterday reached the point where the team could wait no longer. Austin Wonaeamirri made a difficult decision much easier. The exciting small forward was yesterday officially cut from Melbourne's list. That was the hard part - severing ties with a talent of great potential. The easier part was that the decision was taken because the player had been missing for weeks. Wonaeamirri returned to Darwin and then home to the Tiwi Islands after the club best and fairest a month ago and has not been seen since. Advertisement: Story continues below IFRAME: http://ad-apac.doubleclick.net/adi/onl.age.sport/afl/aflnews;cat=afl;ca t1=aflnews;ctype=article;pos=3;sz=300x250;tile=3;ord=2.3650932E7? He was due to return to Melbourne on October 10 to consult the surgeon who operated on his ankle, and then to join pre-season training that began yesterday. He is still yet to return. ''Unfortunately, we have been unable to adequately communicate with 'Aussie' to determine his future intentions. The Melbourne Football Club has made the choice to delist Aussie, and will continue to work with him over the next period to assist in planning for the next phase of his career," Melbourne list manager Tim Harrington said. As a player who burst on to the scene with 18 games in his debut season of 2008 after being promoted from the rookie list, Wonaeamirri managed just 13 games in the three next seasons. ''In terms of whether it was a tough decision, to delist any player is a tough decision and you need to make sure you're doing the right thing,'' new coach Mark Neeld said yesterday. Wonaeamirri's manager, Ned Guy, said his client had not given up on AFL but had been weighing up his future. ''He has needed some time at home to think about his future and if he still has the desire to do what it takes to play AFL football, and Melbourne were very patient with him, but their hands were tied too by the AFL deadlines for list lodgment,'' Guy said. The Demons also delisted Michael Newton but Wonaeamirri was the biggest surprise yesterday. Leon Davis was delisted by Collingwood, or ''retired from the club'' as it was phrased, after informing them that for family reasons he did not want to return to Melbourne to play. His decision ensured premiership forward Brent Macaffer was retained on the list, while midfielder John McCarthy was delisted. Collingwood also delisted injury-plagued small forward Brad Dick who had reconstructions on both shoulders and knees. St Kilda meanwhile retained a clutch of out-of-contract players, notably full-back Zac Dawson. Dawson, Farren Ray, Raph Clarke, Dean Polo and Brett Peake all remain out of contract. Sean Dempster remains out of contract but negotiations are understood to be closing on a new deal for the player who finished third in the best and fairest this year. fSFormer North Melbourne player Jason McCartney has been appointed list manager at the Western Bulldogs. McCartney, who also played at Adelaide and Collingwood, had worked with the AFL and Australian Institute of Sport in high-performance roles before moving to Fremantle as a development coach for the past two years.
