Gray border remains around image whether box is checked or not, in both catalog and product node pages. By default the product node has a border around the product image which isn't something that can be toggled so not sure how it is used on your site. If that gray border isn't toggleable, any chance you could point me towards its location in the CSS files? The client wants no border between the product images and the rest of the page.
