Natural spring erupts under house A natural spring has erupted beneath an urban house, creating a steam that flows straight out of the foundations. By Richard Savill 6:56PM GMT 29 Oct 2008 George and Shelley Pashby thought an underground pipe had burst when water began gushing into their garden in Plymouth, Devon. But tests have found the steady stream of water, which appears to be spilling from beneath the house, is not the result of a burst main. Although there are known natural springs in the area, water officials said it was not yet known as to why one has suddenly appeared. The most likely theories were that the water has come up from an old well, or from a spring source covered up by urban development. Mrs Pashby said her family had lived in the house for 10 years and had never had such a problem. "The structural engineer who came up here said it is definitely springs." Mrs Pashby, 30, who has four children, Jade, 11, George, nine, Billy, three, and five-month-old Jack, said the family was now seeking to move out. The discovery has led to suggestions that the family could bottle and sell the water, echoing the plot of the BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses in which brothers Del Boy and Rodney Trotter sell 'Peckham Water' from their home. However sources at South West Water said they believed it would be impossible to do so because the property was owned by the council who would almost certainly have any mineral extraction rights. Strict health regulations would also govern the process, the sources added. A spokesman for Plymouth City Council said: "We have been doing everything we can to identify the source of this problem. "If there is no fault with the main then this would suggest an underground spring or blocked culvert may be causing the problem in which case we would have to take appropriate action to divert the water." "We have employed a firm of geological consultants who are carrying out detailed investigations, including looking at local structural plans of the area. These investigations will take some time to complete." South West Water said it would visit the property to take water samples for testing, which would enable it to establish its source. The original spring has dried up but we have found enough water coming out the hillside to keep a family of 6 in plenty of water. My problem is - I have 3 - 3/4" flex black hose coming from the hillside. They all originate under a large tree just up the hill from the cistern. I found the water running out of the hill - dug down and felt it flowing and stuck the pipes in. There has got to be a better way to do this. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Should I cut down the tree and try to get it all into one pipe (easier to bury for winter)? How can I develop these into better sources? They were tested to have bacteria (you can see a film on the water if you let it sit) and were told to get a UV light. Advise - suggestions - help!!!! The box is part way filled with gravel and the piping to the cistern or a pump is installed. Almost at he top of the box will have (1 or 2) 4 PVC pipes to keep the box form over flowing. There is a cover on the top to access the insides. I have seen these to be as small as a few feet foe cistern. I have seen these the size of a small septic tank for systems with pumps. I have never installed these but I have worked on them. My biggest problem is fighting around the roots of the tree to get to the water. I don't want to remove the tree and mess up the flow of the spring but its not functional as it is. I'll try the box and see how that goes. There is a bacteria that I was told needed to be sterilized with a UV light. Is this normal? If I can get it deeper could this go away? Thanks for the help. Coppens, eHow Contributor updated: October 5, 2010 Springs are a good source for natural water. Springs are a good source for natural water. Whether for survival or if you simply want a free source of water, natural springs are the answer. These natural water sources can be found throughout the world, even in deserts, if you search hard enough. The best way to find a natural spring is with the help of animal life and by observing the natural elevation of the ground. Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions 1. 1 Watch the direction in which birds fly at dusk and dawn. Their general direction may point you to a natural water source. Birds also fly in circles around a water source. 2. 2 Pay attention to signs of wildlife, such as animal droppings, trampled plant life or actual animals. Follow the signs as animals tend to stay close to a water source. 3. 3 Observe insect activity while you walk through the wilderness. An increase in the number of insects often indicates water is nearby. 4. 4 Look for dense, bright green vegetation. If the plant life suddenly becomes more dense, it's usually a sign of abundant water. 5. 5 Move to the area of highest elevation. Look around for crevices or ditches in the ground or rock formations. Over time, a natural springs can wear away the earth and create a steady flow of water. You should also take note of any valleys. 6. 6 Move to a low elevation, such as a valley, as this is where springs naturally drain. If you do not see flowing water, you can often find water in the ground by digging down at least 6 inches. Tips & Warnings * Springs the flow through rocks are more likely to be safe to drink. * Natural water should always be tested or purified before you drink it. * Water purification tablets are readily available at most outdoors supply stores. Everything is blooming and it is so pretty! If you wait until June or so... it will be pretty as well- but the initial blooming will be gone but flowers should be out. But seriously, if you go up to the Parkway right now, especially to the higher elevations, you don't see nearly as much color as you will toward the end of May. April on the Parkway can still be kind of brown. June and October really are the prettiest months. Heck, there's no reason we can't go in a few weeks and in June. We were there in October-twice-and everything was just beautiful. So I can't wait. I guess there is always something beautiful to see along the Parkway and throughout the mountains. So we will just have to keep going back! (Maybe snow again this weekend they say??) A spring may flow the whole year or only sometimes. This depends on the water getting into the ground all of the time (rain) or only once in a while (snow melting). A spring often sends water down, along the land. This is how rivers start. Some springs produce water that is good for health reasons. Sometimes towns grow by these springs because many people who are ill come there to get better. Such towns are called spa towns. Me i dont want it to be a wishing well full of coins so im wondering if anybody wants to improve it with me and fix it up a bit. some sort of cover or back fill it a bit maybe even a spout? im game for ideas THanks jay * Deb Hi Mo, Thanks for posting the info about this spring. I have collected from this spring for about 7 years. The longest collectors I have met was an elderly couple who have been going there for over 30 years, I have only heard good things about it. The interruption from the new bridge was a frustration, but have been happy to be able to access it again. I have concerns about it though, and I would appreciate your thoughts. My friend who was visiting me noticed some tiny white floating particles in the water. We went to the source and checked it out with a clear glass and it is definitely coming out that way. I don’t know if this is a new thing from the new set up or was always the case from the previous set up? What do you think it could be? Is it safe? Is it just natural minerals, you said it was low on calcium? Am I so programmed to drink filtered water that I can’t even recognize good water when I see it? It seems safe, and your testing is reassuring, I have poured the water through a natural coffee filter, it took out most of it. Thank you Deb * Deb Hi Jay, Yes I don’t like things thrown in, I noticed that too. I have never seen any problems, like this before in all of my time going there. A cover and spout would be great! I have been looking for information on how to do this. We have three natural springs that bubble up from the ground, so the water level must be fairly high. Although we have a running brook on our property also, we want to run some sort of pipe into the ground so that if the water dries up in the brook there will be alternative sources available to us. I have not been able to find out how to do this. I am wondering if a pipe driven into the ground would be sufficient or if it needs a pump or some other sort of force to drive it up. About 3 miles away, there used to be a pipe driven into the side of a hill near a rock outcropping. People used it for years to get fresh water. Thanks for any info you can provide, as we want to do it in the spring. Then you either pipe that out, or you open a door and dip it with a bucket. If your house is downhill from the spring, you might not need a pump, but otherwise you definately do. Be careful about chemicals when building the spring house. One was under the house in the corner of the garage . We made concrete walls 4'x4' x4' deep and dropped a pump in it . we made a box with heat to stop it from freezing . The other spring was up hill from a garage/ coach house . We dug a hole 4x4 x4 and dropped a plastic drum in the bottom . We back filled the drum with 3/4 gravel. Then cut a 4" hole 2' down under the ground and added 30' of 4"pipe then 30' of 3" 30' of 2" with a clean out on the end . We ran 3/4" pipe into the house for the sink , toilet and shower . We had good pressure for showers . The pipe drop ed off about 22' from the spring to the house . This was a temporary set up we used wile building the house . We used it 8 years before we drilled a well . Some times if the spring is in rock you can dig in to the crack the water is coming from and set a pipe in concrete . If you use a drum and gravel idea you need to cover the area with clay soil and leave the top of the drum out of the ground a few inches to keep ground water out . Test the water to see if its contaminated . There are a lot of field stones around, but digging is easy. I am sure the water is safe. There is nothing running onto the land, and the nearby brook is clean for miles, except maybe unless an animal dies in it. I drank from it as a kid for years. We also have a stone well built right onto our back porch, but it has always been cemented over the top. It may be a good idea to uncover it and see what is at the bottom. I think my grandfather covered it up because he was afraid that us kids would fall in. For it to be safe the water cant mix with ground water . A true well will have water that is from deep in the ground .When a well is drilled in the ground there is a steel casing that gets cemented in to solid rock . If the seal leaks your well can be contaminated with ground water. You mite be able to drink from a hand dug well but in most cases it will have impurities in it . You may never have a problem until one day you get the runs . Where the spring is visible on the ground is not where its coming from. I would get the water tested and they will tell you the deal . If the water has dinosaur poop in it, it the best . people poop NG . Its all in the test . The water could always be used for washing and boiled for cooking or drinking . I thought because it was coming up in one spot, that there was a spring right under it. We will have to get it checked then. I was thinking that if the brook dried up, we could use this as an alternate source. I was planning on purifying anything that came from this source anyway. Wouldn't want to get sick. Thanks. This link is a company I got some stuff from. The "water collection system" pictures give enough information to come up with your own plan. I used this one and it worked great. I dug into the side of the hill above the spring until I headed the spring up. I then poured a concrete pad, actually bowl shaped in the bottom. I dug a notch up the sides of the excavation to tuck the sides of the backwall into and set the bottom of the headwall into a notch on the bottom. I then cast the bowl in the bottom and grouted the sides into the notch. Water from the outlet flows into a cleanout I made. I filled the excavation up to the top of the headwall with washed stone, covered this with thick plastic, and backfilled the excavation. Works great. I have one of the 500 gallon tanks, so water isn't a big worry for me. I bought the headwall kit because I didn't think I could make one better. It's not too expensive and worth every penny. The other components you can improvise on. Hope this helps someone. Sometimes willows and ceder work also. On a side hill look for sepiege. You can dig a whole with a shovel or posthole digger or even a power augar. I douse also which gives me a better idea of where the water is and the direction of the flow. If your real sure where there is water then use a backhoe. flatwater __________________ Always walk a mile in your enemies shoes , that way your a mile ahead of them and you have their shoes flatwater is offline Reply With Quote flatwater View Public Profile Send a private message to flatwater Find More Posts by flatwater Old 12-17-2008, 12:36 PM #4 jams002 Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Posts: 4 Default _________________________________________________________________ i want to know that how to find an natural spring water in one place?! ___________________ Great thing to know about busby seo test. jams002 is offline Reply With Quote jams002 View Public Profile Send a private message to jams002 Find More Posts by jams002 Old 12-17-2008, 12:36 PM #5 jams002 Junior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Posts: 4 Default _________________________________________________________________ i want to know that how to find an natural spring water in one place?! ___________________ Great thing to know about busby seo test. jams002 is offline Reply With Quote jams002 View Public Profile Send a private message to jams002 Find More Posts by jams002 Old 12-26-2008, 07:31 PM #6 skip Old hillbilly Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: , MO Posts: 96 Default _________________________________________________________________ Elderberries are another sure sign that water is not very deep. skip is offline Reply With Quote skip View Public Profile Send a private message to skip Find More Posts by skip Old 01-13-2009, 02:33 PM #7 lisat Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Posts: 51 Default _________________________________________________________________ This is too funny. After posting this I followed our sometimes dry creek bed up the small mountain behind our house looking for a spring. There is always water trickling somewhere and mountain isn't big enough to have runoff all the time. Someone many years ago built this rock waterfall and at the base of it there appears to be a natural spring bubbling out of the ground! I cleared around it and don't find a source. It is dry everywhere around it. I followed up above the waterfall to see if I could find someplace else the water could be coming from and don't see anything. Someone put PVC pipe at the water source and ran it all the way down into a huge concrete cistern. I can hear it trickling in there. It has a metal roof over it. It is then piped from the other side down the mountain to the back of our property where the pipe is capped. I took it off and it is trickling into the creek bed again. I am guessing the cap is to fill the cistern and then you could use it for watering your back property where there is no plumbing. I found the reason for this elaborate set up. There are remains of a still nearby. I found 2 furnaces and remains of a bunker type hole in side of mountain. There are rusting barrels laying around. We had been told there was an old still on our property. Is this water safe to boil and drink? Or would I need to get water at source in ground? It is bubbling up out of the ground. I can take pictures if it would help. lisat is offline Reply With Quote lisat View Public Profile Send a private message to lisat Find More Posts by lisat Old 01-13-2009, 04:35 PM #8 The_Blob performing monkey The_Blob's Avatar Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: corner of 'BF' & 'you gotta purty mouth', Ohio Posts: 1,459 Default _________________________________________________________________ you could always have samples tested, I don't think it's expensive we have several springs in the area, none on my actual property though, & the water is very very good The_Blob is online now Reply With Quote The_Blob View Public Profile Send a private message to The_Blob Find More Posts by The_Blob Old 01-14-2009, 02:38 AM #9 lisat Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Posts: 51 Default _________________________________________________________________ Good idea I will have it tested. I wonder since it passes through the cistern and then all that PVC to my yard may have mildew in it. Maybe throw some bleach in there. April 2006 Product Reviews / Main Nibbles / Beverages Via Natural Spring Water Almost-Virgin Spring Water from the Brazilian Interior CAPSULE REPORT: Now available in America, award-winning Via Natural from Brazil is one of the purest of spring waters. Its attractive bottle will make it a favorite among water connoisseurs with a sense of style. If water is a dance, one might think that Via Natural, coming from the heartland of Brazil, is a samba. But perhaps this virginal water, with only minor traces of dissolved solids (see chart below), is a pure and innocent waltz. The source, called Fonte Sant'Ana, is one of the purest in the country. It is located in a remote region of falls and cataracts near Sandovalina, a verdant town in the in the western part of the state of São Paulo, approximately 375 miles from the capital city of Via Natural the same name. There, spring water erupts from solid rock in an intense flow. Stainless steel piping is used to transport the water into the bottling plant. While distance from any industry pollution contributes to maintaining the purity of the source, as the bottlers point out on their website, scrupulous attention to all procedures during the bottling process also is required to deliver a top-quality product. If you go to the Photos section on the company website, bypass the initial fuzzy selection of shots and then click on "More Photos," you'll get an interesting virtual tour of a modern water bottling plant. While the spring is far inland, hundreds of miles from any or gulls as the label would have one believe, the design is a nice departure and earned the brand three packaging awards in 2004 plus a finalist designation at the London International Advertising Awards for package design. If you like to try different waters and your style is pure H20--no discernable flavor--or if you like to be seen holding an attractive bottle, add Via Natural to your list. Many bottles of water are labelled "spring" water or "distilled" water or even "reverse osmosis', but which type is healthiest and best to drink for a healthier body? I've read many health books that say ONLY drink distilled water. * 4 years ago * Report Abuse mystic_eye_cda by mystic_e... Spring water is gathered from natural springs and can contain any amount of any variety of minerals. I can also technically be polluted, but generally that is avoided. Some spring water is even naturally carbonated. Distilled water is water that has no (or almost no) trace minerals in it. There is some evidense that areas that have soft water have a higher incidence of heart diease than areas with hard water. Soft water has less trace minerals than hard water, distilled water has none. IMHO distilled water is probably bad for you over the long term. Your body needs trace minerals, I am sure you also receive some of the same minerals from food such as veggies but possibly not all and possibly not enough. And reverse osmosis is just too artificial for me (plus it tastes bad, like really really bad to me) Source(s): http://www.mgwater.com/lancet.shtml http://www.bhf.org.uk/questions/index.as… http://www.cwqa.com/html/consumer6.html * 4 years ago * Report Abuse 33% 2 Votes * 1 person rated this as good * Action Bar: * 2 stars - mark this as Interesting! * Email * Comment (0) * Save + Save to Yahoo! Many of the bottled waters are actually pumped from rivers (like the Monongahela near Pittsburgh) or from underground aquifers that may have been infiltrated by local waste waters. Some are actually taken from the pipes of city water supplies (like Acton Mass). They are then filtered and bottled to sell. Reverse osmosis is a process for taking water and forcing it through a filter to eliminate chemicals and minerals. There are cities in Florida that get their drinking water by taking in brackish swamp water and pumping it through those filters to make clean RO drinking water. I just visited the Ichetucknee River Natural Park in Florida. I am curious how does a natural spring work? Where is the water coming from why was it so cold??? I cannot locate any information online and I%26#039;m just curious. Best Answer Rain water seeps into the ground and accumulates in caves or other spaces in the rock. A spring is an opening from a cave that has a water level higher than the level of the spring, so the water is forced out through it. The water is cold because it%26#039;s stored deep enough underground that it isn%26#039;t warmed by the sun. Most deep caves have a temperature of around 60 degrees fahrenheit. Distilled water, especially non-aerated tastes flat. If you’re looking purely for health reasons, I suppose you can’t go wrong with distilled water, but you will quickly find that it does not give you that "good drink of water" feeling that you use to. In short, it’s a matter of taste. I can't speak to the Poland Spring brand, because I don't remember having drunk it. Sources: Personal experience. Sign in and you can: Private message Become a friend Follow Answer from BrainBuilder_is_gone 2 of 2 people found this helpful Spring water will have a better taste, and a little more mineral content Spring water is exactly that. It’s water from a naturally flowing water source.Along with trace amounts of minerals there could also be trace amounts of toxins. Distilled water on the other hand has been completely purified to contain only water. This is most commonly done by evaporating the water and catching the vapors.leaving everything else behind. This is the most logical choice whilst fasting for detoxification,as you’re not putting anything but the fluids in. Distilled water: In chemical and biological laboratories, as well as industry, cheaper alternatives such as deionized water are preferred. However, if these alternatives are not sufficiently pure, distilled water is used. Where exceptionally high purity water is required, double distilled water is used. Distilled water is also commonly used to top up lead acid batteries used in cars and trucks. The presence of other ions commonly found in tap water will cause a drastic reduction in its lifespan. Using distilled water in steam irons for pressing clothes can help reduce mineral build-up build-up and make the iron last longer. However, many iron manufacturers say that distilled water is no longer necessary in their irons.^[citation needed] Some people use distilled water for household aquariums because it lacks the chemicals found in tap water supplies. It is important to supplement distilled water when using it for fishkeeping; it is too pure to sustain proper chemistry to support an aquarium ecosystem. [edit] Drinking distilled water This section does not cite its references or sources. You can help Wikipedia by introducing appropriate citations. Drinking distilled water is most common in ships, especially nuclear powered ones which require a large supply of distilled water as coolant. The water is produced by distilling seawater. Distilled water may also be used as drinking water in arid seaside areas which do not have sufficient freshwater, but plenty of seawater. The drinking water is produced in desalination plants, although it is very expensive due to the large amount of fuel needed to boil water. Alternative technologies, especially reverse osmosis are becoming increasingly important in this regard due to greatly reduced cost. Distilled water is sometimes bottled and sold as well, especially where tap water is not suitable for consumption without boiling or chemical treatment. Some people drink distilled water for its purity and for its improved taste. Municipal water supplies may have trace contaminants at levels which are scientifically believed to be safe, but some people feel safer drinking distilled water. It also has no minerals, which may make it taste better. [edit] Pros and cons The drinking of distilled water has been both advocated and discouraged for health reasons. The purported effect of drinking water in its pure form is a ’more powerful solvent’ that helps cleanse toxins from the body. From a chemist’s point of view, however, this statement is at best an incomplete description. Detractors argue that it robs the body of essential minerals in this way and also deprives it of minerals normally acquired from drinking water. While there is no evidence to suggest that drinking distilled water is harmful or leaches minerals from the body, the World Health Organization has assembled considerable research which shows a relationship between drinking water containing naturally-occurring minerals and lower rates of certain diseases.^[citation needed] Despite the perceived benefits, the cost of distilling water (about 0.04 to 0.10 Euro or USD per liter in 2005) prohibits its use by most households worldwide.^[citation needed] It has been suggested that because distilled water (like reverse osmosis produced water) lacks fluoride ions that are added by many governments (such as most municipalities in the United States) at a water treatment plant for its effect on the inhibition of cavity formation, the drinking of distilled water may conceivably increase the risk of tooth decay due to a lack of this element.^[1] Regardless, most people continue to cook with tap water as treated and delivered by their government, and in cases of fluoridized water this is thought to potentially provide sufficient fluoride to maintain normal prophylaxis in many cases. Studies funded by the World Health Organization and others seem to show a clear relationship between minerals in tap water such as calcium and magnesium and a decreased rate in certain diseases. In many other developing countries, government water treatment is necessary for health, but distilled water, if affordable, can be even safer by eliminating risks caused by variations from standards. An argument against shunning distilled water for displacing government-treated water is that governments treat water because it is much more economical than individual households treating it. Therefore, people who can afford it may choose distilled water for their drinking, and that does not deprive them of an overall health and caries plan, nor does it deprive governments of making changes informed by new knowledge (such as providing a caries prevention plan that includes distilled drinking water). [edit] Myths A popular myth about distilled water is that it has the dangerous property of being more easily heated above its normal boiling point without actually boiling in a process known as superheating. When the superheated water is disturbed or has impurities added to it, a nucleation center for bubbles form. These bubbles formed are new nucleation centers, and a sudden, explosive boil occurs, possibly causing serious injury to anyone near it. In fact, superheating of plain tap water, for instance in the microwave, is just as great a danger as when heating distilled water. In the popular Discovery Channel show Mythbusters, an experiment was conducted where distilled water was placed in a microwave oven for several minutes long enough to boil, but no convection (boiling bubbles) took place. When a contaminant (a sugar cube) was added to the superheated water, it had an explosive effect. However, this effect also occurs with normal tap water, as macroscopic impurities (especially those which carry air bubbles) are needed for boiling to start. The dissolved impurities in tap water are not enough to inhibit the superheating. [edit] Unproven cleanliness of bottled distilled water To meet Wikipedia’s quality standards, this article may require cleanup. Please discuss this issue on the talk page, and/or replace this tag with a more specific message. Editing help is available. This article has been tagged since October 2006. A second criticism of distilled water supplies as used around the world (in 2006) is that individual bottling is often used for economic distribution. Some distributors sanitize and seal the bottle with each filling; however, many households and companies (who keep water dispensers for employees and customers to drink) re-use their bottles. While municipalities and government-organized water services treat and measure contaminants in water, bottled distilled water, while assumed to be contaminant-free (as with piped government supplies where the pipes are not tested), is not necessarily proven to be as safe as assumed, or safer. For example, even though instructions like the ones below are often given by bottled distilled water suppliers, few standards are available for knowing the effect of using a bottle a long time between washings, for knowing how many people follow the instructions correctly, what happens when they do not follow them at all, or for knowing that the washing is not leaving soap or bleach, or that cracks in the bottle are not harboring bacteria. Although this risk is small enough to be thought negligible, studies are needed to prove it and measure the effect in individual households, and to compare this supply with government-delivered water supplies. Instructions for keeping water bottles and dispensers clean, as given to public consumers: * Every 2-4 months, empty the bottle (through normal use). * Fill it with 2-4 liters of distilled water. * Add 1-3 ml of household bleach. * Close the bottle and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to cover all inside surfaces. * Let the bottle sit closed for 10 minutes. * Empty the bottle and rinse it twice with 2-4 liters of distilled water. * Re-fill the bottle with distilled water for use. * Routinely wipe all surfaces of the water storage tank and dispenser above the water without introducing soaps or bleach that cannot be thoroughly rinsed. * Clean the dispenser by running 2-4 liters of distilled water with 1-3 ml of household bleach completely through the dispenser. * Rinse the dispenser by running 2-4 liters of distilled water through all portions. * At all times, keep stored water bottles sealed closed in a cool, dry storage room, out of direct sunlight (Leave water in the hot trunk of a car for no more than 20 minutes for delivery), because heat from sunlight over time promotes bacterial growth. * Dust off bottles before inverting into a dispenser, and wipe them without introducing chemicals to the water supply. * Discard bottles after 2-5 years of use, and never use water or a bottle that develops any detectable smell. * Re-cap empty bottles while being stored (other sources say leave them open to air dry). * When re-filling empty bottles, pour in a liter of distilled water and swish it around to rinse the inside of the bottle, then pour it out before filling the bottle. Some "spring" water has been found to be tap water that has been purified, but that type of false advertising has decreased. As far as what is better for a baby, ask your doctor. They should be your only authority. I would favor spring.
