JournalLive http://blogs.journallive.co.uk/journalblogcentral/ Voytek the Memorial / Wojtek wspomnieniem By Kasia Bobrzak on Nov 12, 08 09:40 PM bronze statue2.jpg The memorial to honour Polish and Scottish soldiers who died in World War II has been unveiled on the 10th of November in Redbraes Park in Edinburgh. This memorial has been designed to commemorate Polish and Scottish links and also to remember a bear called Voytek, which helped the soldiers during the war. The sculptor, Scottish policeman Simon Daley wanted to bring the communities together by sharing the history with Poles and English. He also wanted to unveil the sculpture as a part of 90th anniversary of Polish Independence Day and Remembrance Day in the UK. The ceremony was attended by Edinburgh North MP Mark Lazarowicz, Polish Consul General and members of Polish and Scottish public, which showed up in thousands. Children from both communities also took part in the ceremony by telling the story of Voytek the soldier in both languages. A book telling the story of Voytek has also been published early this year in January by Garry Paulin. The author of this bilingual book has been invited to the Children's Day event organised by PEGAZ Polish Community Organisation this year in Gateshead. He also provided a number of books to the organisation together with his autograph. More information about this story and the gallery of war pictures you can found on www.wojtekthebear.com. Wojtek wspomnieniem wojny W zeszłą niedzielę w Broughton's Redbraes Park w Edynburgu odbyło się uroczyste odsłonięcie pomnika upamiętniającego tysiące polskich i szkockich żołnierzy, poległych podczas II Wojny Światowej.
