   La centrale hydraulique est la propriété de SIG, c'est le principal
   ouvrage hydroélectrique du Rhône genevois.

   Il a été construit entre 1938 et 1943.

   Utilisant la chute entre la jonction du Rhône et de l'Arve et le
   défilé des coteaux de Russin, ses quatre turbines-alternateurs
   fournissent une puissance électrique totale de 100 MW et produisent en
   moyenne 466 Gwh par an. La retenue de 13 millions de m³ formée par le
   barrage est appréciée par une très grande variété de canards, refuge
   d'hiver bien abrité pour les migrateurs avec vue sur le vignoble
   avoisinant. Le poste de transformation de Verbois est la principale
   liaison avec l'extérieur du canton et la France voisine. C'est à
   travers des liaisons de 400 et 230 kV que SIG obtient le complément
   d'énergie nécessaire à l'alimentation du canton de Genève.
   Le rétablissement des voies de migration pour les poissons n'a pas été
   oublié. SIG a doté la centrale de Verbois d'une échelle à poissons qui
   permet aux diverses espèces de franchir la chute de 20 mètres assurant
   ainsi les échanges avec le bassin lémanique.
